Got Mold? So Do These Celebrities.

Celebrity Mold Issues

Mold is an equal opportunity invader that has no regard for fame, wealth or status. Here are some well-known celebrities who have had their own nightmarish experiences with mold infesting their homes.

Ted Nugent Hunts a Different Type of Prey

In 2003, rock star and hunting enthusiast Ted Nugent, along with his wife and son, tested positive for toxic mold poisoning after experiencing symptoms such as chronic fatigue, insomnia and breathing problems. His wife Shemane, a health and fitness expert, related the story on her blog, describing how they were forced to walk away from their 5,000 square-foot home in Michigan with only the clothes on their backs.

Lou Ferrigno Is Taken Down by a Microscopic Killer

Lou Ferrigno, former competitive body-builder best known for playing the Hulk on TV, sued his insurance company when one of their inspectors failed to discover a water leak in his home that led to a mold infestation. An out-of-court settlement was reached, but damage was so extensive that it took more than a year to complete the repairs.

Mold Silences Singer Katrina Parker

Katrina Parker was an aspiring singer who appeared on NBC’s competition show “The Voice.” During interviews, she explained how she had to put her career on hold for two years when she became seriously ill due to mold in her apartment.

Mold and Your Health Connection: Toxic Mold and Depression

Have You Been Experiencing Upper Respiratory Symptoms?

Mold and Depression

It seems that hardly a week can go by without a story concerning toxic mold discovered in homes or schools and other public buildings. While you may be aware of mold as an allergic health threat, did you know that a link has been discovered between toxic mold and depression?

Tracking the Connection Between Toxic Mold and Depression

Over a period of time, a number of studies conducted in the United Kingdom demonstrated an association between mold and depression. A research team headed up by Edmond Shenassa, an epidemiologist from Brown University, decided to challenge this conclusion by conducting their own test.

To their surprise, the team discovered that the results of their study, which were published in 2007 in The American Journal of Public Health, actually supported the earlier findings. Participants included more than 6,000 European adults, and research revealed evidence of a clear link between interior mold and residents exhibiting symptoms of depression.

“Good” and “Bad” Mold

Mold and mold spores are present everywhere, and they play an important role in nature by aiding in decomposition of organic matter such as dead leaves and tree trunks. Problems arise from indoor development of mold containing mycotoxins, which are known to cause allergies and illness in humans and animals.

The Power of Images – Mold Remediation in Action

We Are Number One in Mold Treatment!

We Are Number One in Mold Treatment!

While there have been numerous stories about the dangers of interior mold, it’s difficult for words alone to paint the picture. Our photo gallery features before-and-after pictures that graphically illustrate the unsightly health hazard of mold and the effectiveness of our proprietary MoldExterm treatment.

Before and After: Bathroom

The first three sets of photos show a bathroom that was one of our more recent projects. Bathrooms are a common site of mold infestations due to the frequent presence of excess moisture and the lack of sufficient ventilation.

Nearly every surface of the bathroom, including walls and window frames, was covered with dark mold patches. It would have been next to impossible for the homeowner to thoroughly remove such a heavy coat of mold, and more importantly, there would be a good likelihood of mold returning.

Afterwards, all surfaces are back to their light color. No building materials have been removed, and a polymer sealer has been added to repel future mold infestations.

Before and After: Basement

Basements are dark, damp, stuffy spaces that provide ideal conditions for mold to multiply. The next two sets of photos depict the basement of an art gallery that was overtaken by mold colonies.

Once again, MoldExterm made quick work of the mold stains on the ceiling and walls. None of the wooden ceiling beams required removal. The anti-microbial substrate provides a protective layer over all affected surfaces.

NYC Housing Has Mold Problems – What to Know

NYC Is a Hub for Everything - Including Mold.

NYC Is a Hub for Everything – Including Mold.

Hurricane Sandy dumped a lot of rain in NYC and did a lot of structural damage as well. What most people don’t realize is that all of that water caused dampness and humidity inside apartment buildings that would otherwise have remained dry.

This influx of moisture caused mold complaints to skyrocket in New York city’s public housing, and of 280 residents surveyed in the Red Hook public housing units, over 90% have experienced mold and water leaks where none existed before.

Red Hook Houses

The Red Hook Houses in Brooklyn were some of the worst hit by Hurricane Sandy, and since then they have been dealing with some of the worst mold issues. Around 40% are currently dealing with mold issues, some as a direct result of Sandy, and that was back in 2012.

What’s Being Done

Unfortunately, not much. The problem is so widespread and overwhelming, that it may take a long time to take care of the problem. Mold that was caused by Hurricane Sandy is covered by 438 million dollars in government funding, and generally gets resolved quickly, but mold that was present before the storm is a different matter.

Cost Estimate

The Red Hook Initiative, or RHI, is attempting to gain public and private funding for the repairs and mold treatments that are needed, and until such time as budgets, costs and plans are formulated, the Red Hook Houses will be in a holding pattern.

Is Mold Causing Your Sinus Infection?

Let Us Rid Your Home or Office of Mold!

Let Us Rid Your Home or Office of Mold!

Do you have sinus problems that you’ve come to accept as a chronic condition? Mold allergies can masquerade as a sinus infection or other upper-respiratory ailment, leading people to treat the symptoms rather than the source.

Mold and Your Health: The Hidden Connection

Many people believe that interior mold is merely a cosmetic issue, but according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), all types of mold present a potential health risk. Variables such as age, overall health, and length of exposure determine the severity of your reaction.

Mold doesn’t have to be visually evident to pose a danger. Microscopic mold spores are constantly floating in the air, both indoors and outdoors. Studies have found that something as benign as a Christmas tree can trigger a mold problem.

Healthcare Doesn’t Always Have the Answer

Symptoms of mold exposure can fool even experienced healthcare professionals. In the 1990s, the results of a study conducted by the Mayo Clinic strongly suggested that the majority of chronic sinusitis cases are caused by exposure to mold and fungi.

Unfortunately, most doctors continue to treat sinus infections with antibiotics. While these drugs are effective against bacteria, they’re useless in fighting mold. Be proactive with your healthcare and don’t be afraid to raise the possibility of mold with your physician.
