Even the Ultimate Fighting Championship league has a set of rules. According to a couple in California whose daughter developed terrible symptoms of mold-related illness, some of the most important rules of real estate were broken by star fighter Chuck Liddell’s agents.

In 2014, Liddell put his home up for sale and the Smith family expressed interest. The deal fell through, so Liddell’s agent, Dustin Ward, let them rent the house and offered to find them a loan. They wound up in escrow for a home they didn’t really want.

However, the story takes a sordid turn as the Smith’s 9-year-old daughter began suffering from nose bleeds and respiratory problems. They also found a water leak they believe to be preexisting and known to Liddell’s camp.

The family alleges that Liddell and Ward knew about the leak and mold. They believe Ward aggressively pushed the Smiths into the home to cover up a failed inspection and pass off the mold-infested house like a hot potato.

With a conference set for late August, it looks like Liddell and the other defendants will have to agree to a settlement to avoid a trial.

Organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have posted information and warnings about the dangers of mold in homes and workplaces. The National Capital Poison Center is also speaking out about mold exposure and its effects on health.

The Center acknowledges the unsightly cosmetic effects of mold, but points out that there are more serious dangers involved:

• Mold grows on organic materials such as wood and paper, which can result in structural damage that affects a building’s integrity.

• Health problems have been linked with exposure to mold and mold spores. Studies show that mold can have negative effects through infections, irritations and immune responses such as allergic symptoms.

Where Does Mold Come From?

Mold spores are always present in the air, although they are sometimes tracked indoors via shoes and clothes. There are thousands of types of mold, each with their own characteristics. Some grow in food, while others can be found on wood or bathroom grout.

Much has been written and documented about exposure to mold spores triggering upper respiratory allergic reactions. Researchers are now discovering disturbing evidence pointing to a link between the body’s inflammatory response to mold and structural changes in the brain.

How Inflammation Affects the Brain

A semi-permeable membrane known as the blood-brain barrier protects the brain from neurotoxins while allowing passage of water, glucose and other molecules that are necessary for neural function. Inflammatory reactions can loosen the tight junctions binding the BBB cells, compromising their ability to control what moves in and out.

TGF beta-1 and and IL-1B are two of the specific compounds that produce this inflammatory response in the BBB. Scientists have also found that elevated levels of these substances are present in patients who have developed chronic inflammatory response syndrome after exposure to moldy interiors in water-damaged buildings.

While there have been numerous stories about the dangers of interior mold, it’s difficult for words alone to paint the picture. Before and After: Bathroom

The first three sets of photos show a bathroom that was one of our more recent projects. Bathrooms are a common site of mold infestations due to the frequent presence of excess moisture and the lack of sufficient ventilation.

Nearly every surface of the bathroom, including walls and window frames, was covered with dark mold patches. It would have been next to impossible for the homeowner to thoroughly remove such a heavy coat of mold, and more importantly, there would be a good likelihood of mold returning.

Afterwards, all surfaces are back to their light color. No building materials have been removed, and a polymer sealer has been added to repel future mold infestations.

Before and After: Basement

Basements are dark, damp, stuffy spaces that provide ideal conditions for mold to multiply. The next two sets of photos depict the basement of an art gallery that was overtaken by mold colonies.
