Damp Environments and Your Health as Detailed by the Center for Disease Control

A lot of posts, blogs and articles have been written about how bad toxic black mold can be for your health, and virtually every NYC mold removal company is aware of the problems. Of course when reading these stories, you may think that they’re embellished, made up or downright exaggerated for business or marketing purposes. Well, that can’t be further from the truth.

The CDC

The most respected organization for fitness and health issues, named The Center For Disease Control And Prevention (CDC) which is a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has published a major article called the “Facts About Mold and Dampness.” In it they write about mold and your health, mold in your home, and how to control mold. They also give great mold prevention tips!

Now, even though you may not think of an article on mold as being all that interesting, this one is filled with facts, ideas and information that virtually everyone should know about, and certainly any NYC mold removal company will also know these facts and figures.

Nothing to Sneeze At

Mold in your house or home may actually cause you to sneeze, but it is nothing to sneeze at. There are many serious health issues, particularly for babies and young children, so mold, especially toxic black mold, should be kept out of your house or home. At the very least, this article from the CDC gives prevention tips that should be followed for a happy and healthy mold-free life.

Is It a Sinus Infection or Mold Exposure?

Make sure it's Just a Sinus Infection.

Make sure it’s Just a Sinus Infection.

NYC mold removal is becoming more important than ever. Case in point: Did you know that a sinus infection may not be quite what it seems? That’s right. Research conducted by the Mayo Clinic has found that chronic sinus infections were caused by exposure to mold in 9 out of 10 cases! These findings have differed from as little as 20 years ago when physicians believed that virtually all sinus infections were caused by either a virus or a bacteria.

Home and Work

Both home and work environments were the cause for these findings, as being exposed in either place was enough to both cause a sinus infection and prevent it from going away. And when you think about it, a warm dark and moist place, exactly like inside of your nose, is a perfect breeding place for mold.

What’s the Difference?

A genuine sinus infection and a mold-borne sinus infection are very similar. Headaches, congestion, discolored discharge and pressure in your sinus area are all symptoms of a genuine sinus infection and they are the same symptoms of a fungal sinus infection.

Treatment

Since antibiotics do not affect fungal sinusitis, non-invasive surgery may be required to kill the mold in your sinus cavity. A simple probe is inserted into your nostrils and the treatment is highly effective.

Organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have posted information and warnings about the dangers of mold in homes and workplaces. The National Capital Poison Center is also speaking out about mold exposure and its effects on health.

How Mold Impacts You

The Center acknowledges the unsightly cosmetic effects of mold, but points out that there are more serious dangers involved:

• Mold grows on organic materials such as wood and paper, which can result in structural damage that affects a building’s integrity.

• Health problems have been linked with exposure to mold and mold spores. Studies show that mold can have negative effects through infections, irritations and immune responses such as allergic symptoms.

Where Does Mold Come From?

Mold spores are always present in the air, although they are sometimes tracked indoors via shoes and clothes. There are thousands of types of mold, each with their own characteristics. Some grow in food, while others can be found on wood or bathroom grout.

The one common thread uniting all types of mold is water, which is a necessary component for growth. Recently flooded areas or excessively humid spots like basements and bathrooms are prime targets for mold infestations.
